For nearly a century Naval Station Norfolk has served as the primary base of operations for the United States Atlantic Fleet. NS Norfolk was originally two separate bases, Naval Operations Base and NAS Norfolk. NOB was dedicated to supporting the ships of the fleet, while NAS Norfolk, the birthplace of Naval Aviation, housed, maintained, and repaired the carrier based and supporting aircraft of the Atlantic Fleet. These two separate bases were combined into a single administrative entity after the end of the Cold War. Today Naval Station Norfolk aka Norfolk Naval Base, is the largest Naval Base in the world in terms of raw tonnage of ships and supported personnel. Naval Station Norfolk is capable of supporting every type of Naval Vessel in the US Navy's inventory. Currently NS Norfolk is the home port of approximately 75 ships including nearby Little Creek Naval Amphibious Base's inventory of Amphibious Ships. Home ported ship types and classes include Aircraft Carriers (CVN), Amphibious Assault Ships (LHD), Fast Attack Submarines (SSN), Guided Missile Destroyers (DDG), Cruisers(CG), Frigates(FFG), and others. In support of the Atlantic Fleet many auxiliary services and bases are located in the Hampton Roads area. Numerous recreational fields and golf courses are on or near base. The world's largest Naval Exchange or NEX is near the main gate of NS Norfolk. A Naval hospital and major shipyard is in nearby Portsmouth. In Virginia Beach Oceana Air Station is home to many of the F/A 18 Hornet fighter squadrons and Little Creek NAB is the home of the Atlantic Fleet's amphibious warfare operations. Base access is limited to military and civilian personnel, their guests, or persons with official business with NS Norfolk. However 45 minute guided tours are available to the general public via the base's tour office. As the home port for so many ships, many people visit NS Norfolk to see off or welcome back their friends and family from long overseas deployments. The most common deployment is known as a Med Cruise which can range from 5 - 7 months in length during peacetime or up to 18 months during periods of global conflict. Please see Naval Station Norfolk's official website for more information on tours and base access.
