Attractions
  • Gaslamp Quarter

The Gaslamp Quarter is located just a few miles north of Naval Station San Diego. The Quarter is home to many restaurants, bars and nightclubs. Drop in and take a tour of the great nightlife opportunities that abound in the Gaslamp Quarter.

Restaurants
  • Maloney's Tavern

There are many Irish taverns in the Gaslamp Quarter and each one is great, but this one is my personal favorite. Good pub food and great times come easy when you enter this little bit of Ireland.

Naval Station San Diego is the largest Naval base on the West coast of the United States. It is located in sunny Southern California directly in the heart of San Diego. Due to its great location and Ney award winning galley, NS San Diego was recently voted the best posting in the Navy by the readers of Navy Times.

Naval Station San Diego has a long history in the U.S. Navy. The property on which Naval Station San Diego is now located was given to the Federal Government by the city of San Diego on September 3, 1919 in order to build a docking and repair base. After World War II, the name of the repair base was changed to Naval Station San Diego, reflecting its status as a fully operational Naval Station with the mission to support the ships of the Pacific Fleet. NAVSTA San Diego is the homeport for more than 55 ships and it is the home base to nearly 50 various commands of the Pacific Fleet. The total permanent workforce population is approximately 48,000 military and civilian personnel, with a much larger extended community of families, dependents, temporary & contractual workers, and local businesses.

Fleet support is the primary mission of NS San Diego. It shares operational responsibility for more than 95 ships home ported in the San Diego metro area including Nimitz Class aircraft carriers at NAS North Island and fast attack submarines berthed at Naval Base Point Loma. More than 3,500 ship movements among the three major bases are performed annually in the San Diego harbor.

Transport to and from Naval Station San Diego is very convenient. I-5 runs past the station as does the San Diego trolley. If you stay in San Diego while visiting the Naval Station you should try to plan a trip on the trolley. It runs to the U.S. - Mexican border and throughout the San Diego region. A visit to Old Town San Diego and the Gaslamp Quarter is highly recommended. Both of these San Diego neighborhoods give you an insight into the early days of this fabulous Southern California city.

Other attractions in Sand Diego include its many sandy and picturesque beaches such as Black's Beach, La Jolla Shores, Pacific Beach, and Mission Beach. Golf and San Diego go hand in hand as there are over 25 courses within the city itself and dozens more in the metro area. You'll find a great little nine hole course designed in 1955 by Jack Daray on NS San Diego's grounds. Other bases in the area worth taking a peak at include North Island Naval Air Station and the United States Naval Amphibious Base, which are across San Diego Bay on Coronado Island in the city of Coronado. However you can't go wrong with simply walking around this great town and exploring its many gems while soaking up the sunny lifestyle of Southern California.
