The United States Naval Academy has been the primary institution of Naval and Marine Corps officer education and training for over 160 years. Located on the Severn River in historic Annapolis, MD, The Academy currently instructs approximately 4,400 undergraduates known as Midshipmen in Naval Warfare, Engineering, History, Political Science, Mathematics, and other subjects pertaining to achieving the goals of the Department of the Navy. The USNA is referred to by several different monikers depending on the person's background. It is referred to as Annapolis or the Naval Academy by the general public, members of rival military services refer to it as Shipwreck Tech and Canoe U, the NCAA refers to it simply as Navy, while Naval officers refer to the Academy as the Yard or the Boat School. Originally the Academy was known as the Naval School in 1845 when it was founded at the site of the defunct Fort Severn. The original curriculum included three years of study at sea with two additional years, the first and the last, taken at Annapolis. However the curriculum was soon changed to four consecutive years of study in 1851, resembling the course of study today. The Naval Academy began awarding Bachelor of Science degrees in 1933. A standard, uniform curriculum taken by all Midshipmen has been recently replaced with a common core group of courses and 21 different majors in the disciplines of Liberal Arts, Science, Architecture, and Engineering. The course of study is intense with moral, physical, and military education added to a challenging academic schedule. Accordingly the admissions requirements for the Academy are rigorous. Candidates must pass personality and standardized tests, submit a college application, have personal recommendations, pass a physical and vision exam, and be nominated by a member of Congress. For every appointment at the Naval Academy there are usually 5 to 10 nominees with the most qualified nominees receiving appointments. A notable exception to the appointment process is for children of Medal of Honor recipients, if they qualify for admission they are automatically appointed.
